My strange little man

On Sunday Landry woke up with ALL kinds of eye boogers. His eye lashes were caked together and it was gross. He didn't have a fever and was acting fine, so I cleaned him off and we headed to church.

After church, he was still acting great, but his eyes were a little red and they continued to produce yellow pussy stuff. We decided to stop by urgent care on our way just to make sure it wasn't pink eye. I didn't want to send him to school on Monday if it was.

Apparently, (in all my years with allergies I have never heard of this) instead of his nose producing the sinus drainage, his eyes were! Gross! They gave us a prescription for some eye drops, but told us it wasn't anything to worry about.

That night when we were getting him ready for bed we were prepared for the battle of our lives putting eye drops in his eyes.

Low and behold, little man didn't mind it! In fact, when we were finished he picked up the bottle and 'eye, eye'.

Monday morning he woke up and his eyes were a TON better. We decided that we would still give him the eye drops just to be sure. That night we were debating whether we should give them to him again and when we went into his room to get ready for bed, he again picked up the bottle and said 'eye, eye'.

He is definitely my kid. I don't mind putting stuff in my eye and I guess he doesn't either.

Keep in mind this is the same kid that takes nasal spray every night before bed with no problem.

Thank you God for the small blessing of a child who doesn't mind medicine!

Smart Money Smart Kids

If you have read this blog anytime at all, then you know that Joel and I are huge fans of Dave Ramsey. We have been following his baby steps and are almost debt free! You can read more about our whole debt journey here.

This past Thursday, Dave and his daughter Rachel were in town for a book signing. They co-wrote a new book called "Smart Money Smart Kids". It is all about "raising the next generation to win with money". You can check it out here.

barnes and noble book signing

I talked Joel into coming with me and we ended up being 12 in line! We got our book signed and our FPU certificate signed. But that's not even the best part.

smart money smart kids

At each of the book signing they have been giving away $2,000 toward a college scholarship fund! Joel and I both entered to win and wouldn't you know... JOEL WON!!

barnes and noble book signing

We got to be 'interviewed' by Dave right there in Barnes and Noble and then we had our picture taken with Dave and Rachel!

scholarship winner

Y'all we have not started a college fund for Landry yet. We are still on baby step 2. So winning this is HUGE HUGE! When we got to the car and the realization of what just happened hit me I cried. This is as if we had put away $1000 per year of Landry's life. This is not the gift of $2000, it is so much more. We are going to invest this over the next 16 years and by the time Landry heads to college this money will have grown to much much more.

Dave and Rachel,
I doubt you read my little blog, but if you do "Thank you from the bottom of our hearts"!

Bluebonnets 2014

I knew from before I had kids, that taking bluebonnet pictures was going to be a tradition for my family. What I didn't expect was that we would go to the car show every year and take blue bonnet pictures afterward. (At least that is what we have done the last 2 years). I guess when you have a husband that loves cars it only makes sense.

Did you know, its a myth that it's illegal to pick bluebonnets? I guess our little guy won't have the police after him.

Nonna was in town this year, so she had to get a few with her grand baby.

The difference a year makes.

Last year we went to the same bluebonnet patch. While I was taking pictures our lens cap fell out of the pocket and we lost it. We looked everywhere, but never found it. As we were getting out of the car this year I was telling my MIL about it and putting my cap in the car (so it wouldn't happen again).

As we are walking Joel say "Carissa, your never going to believe this", I turn around and look at what he's holding!! We thought for sure the lawn mowers would mess it up, but it was in great condition (just a little dirty)!

Practice Easter Egg Hunt

Last Saturday (while Nonna was here) we decided to have a practice run of Easter egg hunting. That way when we try this week he will know what he is doing.

He caught on VERY quickly and had tons of fun!

When he was finished dumped them all out and wanted to go again!

It made for a really cute photo op though.

I think we're ready for tomorrow!

Babies with Sensitive Skin

babies with diaper rash

~ A gentle reminder: Hooked on the Howards uses Amazon referral links. When you do your shopping through the Amazon links on this page, you support the blog at no cost to yourself. It’s much appreciated!~

As many of you know, my child has VERY sensitive skin! We have been to the doctor many, many times and even seen a pediatric dermotologist several times.

Lately, I have had 3 or 4 moms ask me questions about what I do to keep his eczema and diaper rash under control. Both of which are constant battles because of his sensitivity.

Here are the creams/lotions/washes we use:

aquaphor healing ointment

  • A&D Ointment - at the FIRST sign of any kind of redness on his bum we start using this along with the aquaphor.
  • Lotrimin - we use this when the rash moves up north from his bum
  • Aquaphor Baby Gentle Wash & Shampoo Tear Free- we have tried every wash out there and this is the one we have found to be the best!!! Its gentle enough that it doesn't hurt his eyes and it doesn't smell.
aquaphor gentle wash

eczema lotion

I thought I would share with you all some of the tips I have learned and some of the products we love.

  • The best thing you can do for eczema is to keep the skin moist!
  • We do not bathe Landry every single night. We do it every other or every 3rd day. Obviously, if he is super dirty I will give him a bath, but if he doesn't need it we avoid it. Water dries out the skin, so we try not to bathe him more than necessary.
  • Use warm water. I know with babies and toddlers you don't really get the water hot, but if in doubt colder is better. The heat also dries the skin out.
  • Lotion, lotion, lotion! Especially after baths! That is when the skin can absorb it the most. We also lotion every night before bed and every morning when getting dressed.
  • When diaper rash gets really bad, we add a little bit of baking soda to his bath water. It helps neutralize the acid in his skin. We also try to lower the acidic food he eats when it gets bad. Usually after a day that does the trick.
  • We also changes diaper brands frequently. I have learned that he is not necessarily allergic to any brand of diapers, but he will break out if we use one brand for to long. So I usually buy the 100ish count of diapers and then switch to a different brand next time. We cycle through the brands before starting back with back with the first again.
  • Also, I make our wipes. You can find out how here.
We have been to the doctor many times and we have prescription strength creams too.

I know what a struggle this can be for moms. There is nothing worse than watching your child scream when changing their diaper or seeing it bleed because it is so raw. There have been times when we had to put 4 or 5 different creams on him at once. There have been days when I stopped using wipes and would use a warm wash cloth instead. So mom if you're reading this YOU'RE A GOOD MOM! Please feel free to ask me any questions and I will try to answer or help the best that I can!

**I am not a doctor or an expert by any means. So please see your doctor for your specific situation. Also, I am not being paid for any of my opinions. I just love these products and know what a struggle eczema can be for a mom. However, if you work for any of these companies I will gladly accept free products :)**

4 Wheel Fun

Today is the first day it has been warm enough to play outside in weeks!! So we took this opportunity to try out Landry's new (to us) toy. Thank you cousin Rachel for passing along such a fun toy!

He is ALL boy and loves all things with wheels! So to have wheels that go like daddy's is the best!

I mean, look at that smile!

I see lots of fun spring and summer nights in our future!

Now if only he could figure out the steering…

Torn Cornea

So our weekend was a little dramatic... or at least Sunday was. We went to church, and when we came home we put Landry down for his nap. He was perfectly normal and went right to sleep.

While he was napping, I went to my cousin's house to her Thirty One party. I came home around 2:30 so we could head to our friend Ethan's birthday party. When I got home Joel told me Landry was still asleep. He had woken up, but Joel said he was still acting really tired so he put him back down.

If you know me at all, you know that I hate being late, so I decided we could wake him up. He had been sleeping for 2.5 hours and that is a long nap for our little man. Usually when he wakes up he is immediately is happy self. That was not the case! AT ALL! He was screaming and crying and refused to open his eyes. I just held him close and told him he was in mommy's arms. He couldn't see and I could tell it was really freaking him out. So I just kept my voice calm and talk to him. On the inside, I was crying and scared and worried.

I started singing Jesus Loves Me and Amazing Grace to him while Joel looked up what could be wrong. After almost an hour of crying, not opening eyes, and nearly pure panic we decided to put him in the car. Our thought was that a change of scenery would make him open his eyes. Well, it didn't work. So I told Joel to drive around, we ended up back at my cousin's house. She is a nurse and I figured she could look at him. She rinsed his eyes with water and he finally opened them.

One of his eyes was just fine, the other one was super swollen and blood shot and not good at all. He started acting like himself again and we gave him some benadryl thinking it was an allergic reaction to something. We decided to take him to the urgent care center to make sure nothing else was wrong. I am so glad we did!!

When the doctor saw us she and she ask a bunch of questions. I mentioned that my cousin thought it might be a corneal scratch. She decided it wouldn't hurt to do the test. They put this neon stuff in his eye and then turned off a light and shined a black light. At first she didn't believe what she was seeing.

baby with torn cornea

The stuff around the outside is his eye is just the stuff they put in it. The part directly over is actual eyeball, is NOT supposed to be there. Needless to say, the doctor was very surprised. She proceed to call it a tear not a scratch. She told us we need to see an ophthamologist as soon as possible. She prescribed some eye drops to help prevent infection.

Anyway, long story short we went and saw a cornea specialist today. He was able to look into Landry's eye and see that it was a tear, but it is almost complete healed already! The eye is one of the fastest healing areas on the body. He said it was only on the surface and not any deeper. He shouldn't have any lasting damage. His vision is great! And Landry loved the appointment because ALLLLLLLL of the techs were eating out of the palm of his hand. He was the center of attention and designated himself the official door greeter and waved and blew kisses to everyone who came in. I think there were a couple of people visiting that office today that need some uplifting, and Landry was just the guy to do it.

Landry Updates

Well, Landry is now officially 16 months old (as of Friday). I haven't done an update on his development in awhile, and he is learning so much right now. I don't want to forget anything.

He has so many new words- 'yeeea' (Leo), 'boot bal' (football), 'bay bal' (baseball), 'ba bal' (basketball), 'thac wo' (thank you), 'dada', 'pupu' (pumpkin), 'gr' (grape), 'tada' (all done), 'sue' (shoe), 'bao' (boo), bye, hi (I'm sure there are more that I just can't think of right now.)

He signs- milk, more, please, give me, all done, and food.

He can point to his ear, eye, belly button, nose and mouth.

He knows the animal sounds for a dog, elephant, sheep, and owl. Oh and we can't forget cars. He knows the sound a car makes too.

It seems like everyday he is learning something new. He mimics just about everything we do brushing our hair, brushing our teeth, vacuuming, and really any kind of cleaning.

He also mimics Leo and is constantly trying to play with him. If Leo walks into a room Landry will stop what he is doing and point to him and 'Yeea'.

Landry is definitely full of personality and LOVES attention! When we go grocery shopping he will wave at people and say hi and bye progressively louder until people say it back. When we are at home he loves to make us laugh. He will hide or play peek-a-boo until he gets our attention. He also randomly runs into our room, lays in the middle of the floor, and waits for the 'tickle monster' to come.

At night one of us holds Landry and we say prayers right before bed. He has started hugging both of us around the neck at the same time. MELT. MY. HEART. It is seriously the sweetest thing ever.

One Year Old Boy Gift Ideas

Now that we are a few months past Landry's first birthday I thought I would share some of his favorite toys. I know Christmas is right around the corner (can you believe it) and you may need gift ideas for the little boy in your life. So these are some of Landry's Favorites.

~ A gentle reminder: Hooked on the Howards uses Amazon referral links. When you do your shopping through the Amazon links on this page, you support the blog at no cost to yourself. It’s much appreciated!~

birthday or christmas

1. Little Tikes Cozy Coupe Car- when we first got this car we left the floor board in the bottom and pushed him around, now we have removed the bottom and he is learning to walk around with it. They also have a girl version here.

2. Playskool Explore `N` Grow Busy Ball Popper - we love this toy because it is not annoying! It plays music for 10-30 seconds and then stops. You have to hit the button again to make it go. Landry just laughs and laughs at it and loves chasing the balls around. They also have a girl version here.

3. John Deere Electronic Lawn Mower - if your little guy is like mine then he wants to do everything daddy does. When daddy goes to mow, so does Landry. We love this one because it has lots of buttons he can push to put 'gas' and 'oil' in it. This mower also makes noise from the wheel in the back when he pushes it.

4. VTech Spin and Learn Color Flashlight- This may not be Landry's favorite, but it's on the list as one of my favorites. Its small, light and compact so it's perfect to take with us on the go. It's also perfect for the car and at night because it lights up. If you want something entertaining and not noisy (it's not the silent, but quiet).

5. Little People Animal Sounds Farm - Landry loves this toy because he can open and close all the doors, hear the animal sounds, and pick it up and move it around. We love it because it's easy to move around the house to different rooms.

6. Marshmallow - High Back Chair- This chair is not the best one on the market, but it does the job. When Landry is eating his snack in the afternoon, he will pull it up in the middle of the living room and sit in it. And I'm not gonna lie it;s one of the cutest things ever!

7.Little Tikes Anchors Away Pirate Ship - This is not the table Landry has. I can't seem to find the exact one, but you can see him play with it here. I know you're probably thinking I'm crazy for suggesting this as a Christmas present, but you have to remember Landry turned one in July. We played with this almost every day this summer, and he still goes out and plays with all of the toys that go with it (without the water).

8. Poppin Park Giraffalaff Tumble Top- I know this is simple, right? But isn't this like the only toy we had at one? I don't know what it is about this toy but it always makes him laugh.

Other random gifts that we like are books, here are a few that we love:
Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See Board Book
 The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Where's Spot? (Little Spot Board Books)

Let's Look! (Baby Einstein First Look and Find)

Hopefully, this list helps you find the perfect gift for the little boy in your life! As always, comment with any of your questions and I will try to get back to you. (Make sure you aren't a no-reply blogger. Read about it here.)
