WE'RE DEBT FREE

If you've read this blog at all, then you know that Joel and I have been working to pay off our debt. When we started almost 4 years ago we had close to $100,000 in debt!!! Well just this past month we paid off EVERYTHING!

We paid off my car in February. Can I just tell you she drives so much better now that she doesn't have a payment. Yes, she's small for our growing family, but both car seats fit! And I brought both of my babies home from the hospital in it.

Then just this month we paid off the last student loan!

loan payoff

When I made that final payment it was so surreal. This has been a goal for so long and anytime we talked about finances, the question was always how can we pay this off faster. I think it will really set in next month when we don't have to make the payments.

Now on to Baby Step 3... a fully funded emergency fund.

Who finances furniture?!?!

So good news! Joel and I paid off another debt! Sadly, this was not part of our original debt snowball, this was debt we added on later. We paid off our wonderful living room furniture, who finances furniture??? Well, we did! And let me tell you, our couches suddenly got a whole lot more comfortable!

crazy line to success

Our road to success is not finished, but it has looked a lot like that second picture. Seriously, we are in the home stretch!

Less than $10K left to go!! So close I can taste it! In case you need a reminder we started with over $100K in debt! So we have paid off 90%!!!

Only One More To Go

We paid off another student loan!!! It's been along time coming, so I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am! This means we have 1 more student loan to pay off and then our car is next! We finally hit our stride again and our goal is to be completely debt free (except for the house) in 12 months!

debt snowball pay off

I also have a little confession to make. We have been working Dave Ramsey's Baby Steps, but we have made some mistakes along the way. There have been times when we were going strong paying things off and sticking to our budget, but there have been other times that we bought things we didn't need (right then) and gotten into more debt. I say that because this month we also paid off a mattress that we financed. It wasn't part of our original debt and we got 36 month no interest when we bought it. However, this month we also paid it off 2 years early.

I want this confession to encourage you if you are on the journey to be debt free. It is a journey, and sometimes you slip back into your old habits and get a little off track. But that doesn't mean you stop!

4 Ways Gum Can Help you Keep Your Health Goals

weightloss, weight loss

1. While Your Cooking - chewing gum while your cooking will keep you from snacking as you cook, especially if you are baking. How many times have you finished a meal just to realize that your not hungry because you have munched on the meal the entire time you were cooking?

2. When You're Finished Eating - I read somewhere that this is what Kim Kardashian does to lose weight. I don't know if that is true or not, but the idea is a good one. If you're at a restaurant and you have decided you are full, start chewing on a piece of gum. Having the mint flavor in your mouth will make anything additional taste funny. Not to mention you will be chewing, so you will feel like you are still eating.

3. When You Workout - I recently had a cold and was coughing up a lung. I didn't want to miss boot camp, but any time I got my heart rate up I would start coughing uncontrollably. My trainer offered me a piece of gum... and that did the trick! I don't know if it was the chewing or the mint or something else entirely, but it worked. So don't skip a workout just because you're coughing. It's no longer an excuse!

4. During The Afternoon Snack Attack - you know what I'm talking about. That time right around 3, when you're not really hungry, but you just feel the need to grab a snack. Yeah, it's not just you. I think we all do that. Don't eat, chew gum. It will get you through till you can get home and start dinner.

In all of my years of trying to lose weight these are a few of the tricks I picked. Do you have any tricks you use to keep you from overeating or snacking? I would love to hear them!

2014 Goals

After looking back on my 2013 goals, it's time to set some new goals for 2014. These aren't in any particular order, they are simply things I would like to get done.

2014 new year

  • Stay on budget - in doing so we will finally be able to pay off all of our student loans.
  • Straighten up the house each night before bed.
  • Memorize a verse each night before bed.
  • Eat dinner at the table more often. Along with this I want to meal plan, which will also help with staying on budget.
  • Watch less TV. Read more.
  • Make our bed daily.
  • Read a Bible story to Landry nightly.
  • Redo our master closet.
  • Continue to grow my blog. I would like to see my first check this year.
What are some of your goals? Do we have any in common? If so, let's keep each accountable!

2013 Goals - A look back

As 2013 comes to a close it is fun to look back and see how I did on the goals I set for myself.

1. Finish reading through the Bible this year. Not finished yet.

2. Do a giveaway on my blog. DONE, in fact, I did 2!

3. Continue to decorate our house. Specially finish the guest room and living room (maybe the guest bath and playroom). Worked on this. The guest room is almost finished and we installed shelves in the game room. Not to mention working on our room a little bit.

4. Meal plan! I did really good at this for awhile and I need to get back to it! It helps us save money and eat healthier. This one comes and goes, sometimes I am good at it, sometimes I am not.

5. With the above, I also want to start eating at the table! Landry will be eating dinner with us this year and I want it to be a family affair. Sadly, we eat most of our meals in front of the TV. EPIC FAIL!

6. Learn how to use my Silhouette machine that I got for Christmas It took me till October to learn, but now I love it! Check out out Christmas photo booth fun!

7. Pay off all student loans! We will still have my car payment, but it won't be far behind. Not done yet, we got off budget and were never able to pay extra towards our loans. We hit a major milestone though!

8. Have people over at our house more often. Maybe throw a dinner party or something. DONE

9. Write hand written notes. Not birthday cards, I mean thinking about you notes I wrote a few, but not like I had hoped to.

10. Get pictures off my computer and into our house. Work in progress

Debt Update

So I realize it has been awhile since I updated the blog about our debt. Honestly, life has gotten in the way a little bit. We had to put Landry in school, so we are not able to put as much towards debt as we had been. We also stopped budgeting for a while... I know. We just lost our intensity because it was taking us so long to do.

Well today I am happy to report that we are under $20,000!!!!!! I know what some of you are thinking... "Boy you guys have a long way to go", but if you only knew where we started. By the end of the year all of the student loans will be gone and our focus will be on the car!

Hopefully, this time next year we will take a trip to Dave's studio to do our debt free scream!

Happy Birthday to me!

Today is my birthday! And so far I have had a fun time celebrating! As I get older the days seem to go by faster. Which means, my 30th birthday is only 3 short years away. I got to thinking about things I would like to have done by my 30th birthday, so here is goes:

  • Pay off all debt (except our house)
  • Have another child either by birth or adoption
  • Get my entire house decorated (I know this is an on going process, and I will always want to change somethings... but I want every room to be decorated.)
  • Lose 30lbs and keep it off
  • Stay home with my kids
More to come on my fun filled day later!

Follow up on 2012 Goals

As we approach the end of the year it's nice to look back at the goals I set this time last year and see how I did.

1. Read the Bible through in a year. (This may be harder to do once the baby gets here, but I am going to try) I did great on this until Landry was born! Seriously, every single day until July 9. I tried to catch up after my maternity leave, but felt like it was hopeless and stopped.

2. Memorize all of Proverbs. No...

3. Learn to sew. I have always wanted to, and I got a sewing machine for Christmas this year! I totally did this!!! YAY! I made all of the bedding for Landry's room!

4. Do a better job of putting laundry away. I am good at washing and drying, but when it comes to putting things away... they usually stay on the couch for a few days. Did better on this and put things away most of the time, but as we speak there are clothes on the chair in my room that are clean and have been sitting there for a few days.

5. Continue to blog more, especially once the baby gets here! I don't want to miss anything I have more post than I did last year.

6. Decorate our house! It seems so empty. Not finished, but I did a lot of decorating. Landry's room is done, I did my mantle, we bought living room furniture, we got a guest bed and Joel made a headboard for it, and we got a table for the formal dining room.

7. Exercise Off and on

8. Pay off debt Yes... We have about $28K till we are debt free (except for the house)!!

9. Come up with a chore calendar for all the chores that don't get done very often. There's always one that I forget is on the list!

10. Develop traditions for our little family (soon to be 3). Slowly but surely!

I have done a lot better on these than I thought! Check back tomorrow for 2013's goals!

One loan at a time

Well, Joel and I have been slowly but surely paying off all of our debt. The process is taking us longer than we would have liked... but we aren't giving up. We have been following the Dave Ramsey plan and paying off loans from smallest to largest. With one exception... Joel's car. Back in March we traded down (you can read about it here). Because it was an auto loan for such a small amount the interest rate was pretty high, so we decided to pay it off next.

Well, WE DID!! We paid off Joel's car this month. Seriously, it feels to good!

I should be back in February with another loan paid off.

We also had another huge blessing! I mean HUGE!! An anonymous donor paid off all of Joel's loans! I cried when I found out, it is just more blessing than I can handle. So now the debt snowball is really rolling!

Our goal is to be debt free (except for the house) at the end of the year. We are putting Landry is a MDO program 3 days a week though, so it might take a little bit longer. So be looking for lots of debt payoff post in 2013!

New Living Room Furniture

We have been needing living room furniture since we moved into our house a year ago. We started saving to buy it when we found out we were pregnant. So the living room got put on hold and we bought baby things instead.

Well, right before Landry arrive I had had enough! I just couldn't stand our uncomfortable hand me downs any more. So we broke down and bought new furniture.

We wanted to make sure that it would be something that would last for a LONGGGGGG time. I also wanted something that was comfortable and I could put my feet up on.

Now I need to make some curtains and throw pillows as well as find something to hang on our giant blank wall and our living room will be complete. Almost there!

Another one bites the dust!

We paid off another student loan!!And we paid it off two months early I might add! Sometimes I feel like we are never going to get out of debt, but then we pay off a loan and the snowball keeps moving. For those of you out there trying to pay off debt, stick with it! You can do it!

In another note, I cannot tell you how faithful God is! It continues to amaze me. Every time I feel like our budget is being squeezed and I think we are never going to be able to do this, He ALWAYS comes through. I feel like our money is growing and multiplying. I want so badly to be able to explain (since I am a financial analyst and all), but I swear I can't. Our God is so good!

Our Fireplace

One of my goals for the new year was to decorate our house. I don't plan on having the entire house decorated by the end of the year, but wanted to at least get a start on it. Landry's room is well on its way and I hope to be able to finish it in the next week or two and show you all. But for now I will show you the project I have been working on for a few months (yes, you read that correctly... months)

Without further adu...

A special thanks goes out to my sister Bre for encouraging me to add some color to my house. (More like making fun of me for not having any). And for keeping me from making everything symmetrical.

Follow up on 2011's goals

1. Grow closer to God and continue to seek him more
This year was full of ups and downs, but the trials are what have made me learn to trust God more than I ever have. When I let go and let God, He does things better than I ever could have!

2. Read one book per month
Well, I was doing pretty good at this one, but then we moved and found out we were pregnant and let's be honest, got cable back! So I read several books this year, but probably not 12 books

3. Watch less TV
We got rid of our cable for a few months this year, but when we moved into our house we decided to get it back. I have watched less TV this year than previous years, but I would prefer to watch even less.

4. Exercise more (20 minutes 3 times a week)
HA! I have decided that I hate working out... There are weeks when I have done really good, but most weeks not so much.

5. Finish a couple of scrapbooks that I have started
Again, HA! I completely forgot this was on my list!

6. Blog more often (and write in my personal journal more)
Yes, I would say I have done really good on this one. I more than doubled the amount of post from last year!

7. Pay off debt (I won't say how much and we won't be able to pay it all off this year, but that is a five year goal to be debt free)
TWO loans paid off this year!! All while still continuing to pay on all of our other loans... so we are getting it done. The goals is to be debt free in less than 4 years!

8. Volunteer more
Joel and I did some volunteer work this year.

9. Eat out less, meal plan more
Semi successful on this front...We did good until I found out I was pregnant, but not because we were pregnant. I was just too tired to cook!

10. Date night with Joel at least once a month. (This has to be a goal because his schedule is so crazy it won't happen otherwise)
We have had several date nights in and we have gone out lots with friends. At the mid year follow up we hadn't gone out just the two of us very often, but the second half of the year we made time for it!

It's Addicting!

We paid off another student loan!! Buying a house slowed us down a little, but we are back on track!! We are hoping to get at least one more paid off before the baby comes! It feels SOOOOO good to pay it off! It makes me want to keep going!!

Mid-year Follow Up

1. Grow closer to God and continue to seek him more
It's hard to judge this one, but I have been more consistent in my quiet time and prayer time. These last few months have been full of trials, but I felt the Lord near.

2. Read one book per month
On average, I have read one book a month. However, it took me till March to get started, but now that I am I think it will continue.

3. Watch less TV
We got rid of our cable a month or so ago and that has really helped, so I would say I am doing pretty good on this goal.

4. Exercise more (20 minutes 3 times a week)
HA! I have decided that I hate working out... The last few weeks I have been more active, but it is getting too hot outside!

5. Finish a couple of scrapbooks that I have started
Again, HA! I completely forgot this was on my list!

6. Blog more often (and write in my personal journal more)
Yes, I have done this one!

7. Pay off debt (I won't say how much and we won't be able to pay it all off this year, but that is a five year goal to be debt free)
One down more to go, but we are one the road to success in this area.

8. Volunteer more
Joel and I will be volunteering on the 25th, but we need to look for more opportunities to do this.

9. Eat out less, meal plan more
Semi successful on this front... I need more recipes.

10. Date night with Joel at least once a month. (This has to be a goal because his schedule is so crazy it won't happen otherwise)
We have had several date nights in and we have gone out lots with friends, but we haven't had many dates just the two of us. Hopefully, this will change soon as Joel starts his new job.
